Using DS9

Note: (The words in italics are words found on tabs or buttons in DS9)

  • Type
disp star0001 1 

in the xgterm where you are using IRAF

  • At the top of the DS9 screen click on the REGION button
  • Go to the file coordinate type click on the XY option
  • Mark the stars that you would like to use by clicking in the center of each star. REMEMBER the order you clicked them in!
  • To save the coordinates that you just marked go to the Region tab that is directly above the right side of the image. (This is NOT the same button that you used before.)
  • Click on region (yes this is the 3rd region button you have used so far)
  • Click on the save button (be sure to check the path and the name of your coordinate file.)
  • Generally you can call the file star.reg
  • Also, be sure to epar phot to make sure that the coordinate file is named the same thing as the file you just created.

Remarking Due to an Error While Photting

  • Display the new image (see above for display command)
  • Click on the del all button right above the image
  • Mark stars as before
  • Save as before
