How to Change Your Password

Changing your password is done by typing the following in a command shell:

yppasswd

At this point, you will be prompted to enter your current password, then will be asked to enter and confirm your new password.

IMPORTANT: If you log into TARDIS remotely, don't change your password. SSH to one of the workstations and use the yppasswd command from there.

Some notes about your passwords:

  • Use yppasswd instead of passwd to change your password since passwords are authenticated off the NIS server.
  • PASSWORDS ARE CASE SENSITIVE!!!!!!
  • It is a good idea to change your passwords once a semester
  • Changing your password will effect all Linux computers on the astronomy network.

  • Don't make you password a dictionary word. You'll know because the computer will tell you so and not let you change it. Use a combination of number and letters that would be weird for other people, but you can remember.
